Address: Chorley New Rd, Bolton BL1 4PA
Ah, Bolton School, a most beautiful wedding venue in an unexpected setting. I mean, it's legit a school, it's not just an odd name. This venue is one that is popular amongst my fiancé's relatives, and as a result was one we checked out early. It was beautiful.
The Ceremony
Held in an absolutely enormous room with a truly mind altering organ up front, the ceremony room is possibly one of the most stunning rooms I've ever seen in real life. The space is bright and airy thanks to an abundance of windows, and is the kind of room you could refer to as 'spectacular' without a note of sarcasm in your voice. To be perfectly honest, if this room also housed the reception, I would have booked it on the spot - it's just that good. The walk up to the ceremony room is just as magical, as you pass stained glass windows whilst climbing an elegant staircase. Gaaawjus.
The Food
The venue doesn't allow outside caterers, but does offer an impressive range with its own food - dead northern grub, which is always a winner in these parts, I'm sure you'll agree. For starters, there are five soup options, which all sound delicious, plus a couple more adventurous dishes, such as tarts and chorizo laden sharing platters. The main is a variety of roast dinner style options, all with the most delicious sounding potatoes (garlic roasties, anyone? dauphinoise?) and the dessert options even include a mini afternoon tea, which I love. I haven't personally tasted the food here, but have heard only good things - by all accounts, you can't go far wrong.
The Evening Do
Here is where the venue fell short for us. The breakfast and reception are held in a separate room to the ceremony, and although the space is lovely and has its own merits, after the stained glass window and oversized organ extravaganza of before, it fell a little flat. Personally it didn't give us 'the feeling,' but that doesn't mean the area set up for the evening wasn't great. It's a self contained space with all in one, meaning your guests aren't wandering off into various side rooms (such as they might in
Beeston Manor) instead of busting a move on your lit up dance floor. There is one side room I feel I should mention, and that is the bar area. The space has a small supply of seating and is slightly raised above the overall reception area, allowing you to look out over the space. It's a great resource, and is where guests are ushered to during the room changeover from breakfast to reception, should the weather be bad and the grounds unsuitable. Always worth noting the areas guests will be kept in should it rain - the likelihood is high in these parts.
The Accommodation
On-site, there isn't any. But there are plenty of hotels nearby.
Overall Pros
- Beautiful ceremony room
- self contained reception space
- Great menu choices
- Quite regal grounds (great for official photography)
Overall Cons
- Ceremony room, while amazing, is very very big, which could make a small guest list look a little... lonely
- The bar area is closed off using curtains during changeover, which can feel a little claustrophobic
- Not an exclusive venue (there's an extra charge for exclusivity, and there can be anything from a children's party to a conference going down on the same day if you opt out of it)
